Sumpter Free Health Clinic

I enjoy every email or call I get about the Sumpter Free Health Clinic. In one of the last emails Judy Burke told me about a fish fry and car wash fundraiser the clinic was having on a weekend. I love a fish fry, and knowing the proceeds go to a good cause made it all the better. The event was being held at the clinic which meant I would finally get a chance to go inside.

I spent some time eating good food and having great conversation with others who came out to the event. After I ate and had my car washed, Judy gave me a tour of the clinic. The building (Sumpter Chapel) was donated by a United Methodist church in the area. The clinic staff and volunteers were slowly renovating it. Judy pointed out the spaces they were already using for exam rooms, offices and waiting areas. We ended up in the sanctuary that was filled with office equipment, desks, chairs, clothes and pews. Parts of the sanctuary functioned for waiting areas, a clothes closet and an emergency food pantry.  Judy even pointed out an area where volunteers would leave snacks for patients to eat while they waited to see the doctor.  The staff had pulled up the old faded red carpet and planned to redo the old pine wood floors underneath. Judy told me that they planned to move the office out into the sanctuary and add additional walls for additional exam rooms and a restroom.

There is a lot of work to be done out at the clinic, but I recognize with the spirit of its stewards and God’s blessing, their vision will become reality.
