“And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.” –Luke 14:27<\/em><\/p>\n

This last Saturday I was on Montague Avenue in North Charleston heading to the Panera Bread.\u00a0 For the second time this year, I drove past a man walking down the sidewalk with a cross over his shoulder.\u00a0 I wasn’t in a hurry so I turned around to get some pictures.\u00a0 I was close enough when I took the second picture for the man to notice me.\u00a0 He waved\u00a0 as I drove past.\u00a0 While this is something of an odd occurrence, it’s not as outlandish as it seems.\u00a0 My own church carries a cross through the city of Goose Creek during their Good Friday service to remember the events of the Crucifixion.\u00a0 In many parts of the Christian community, the phrase “carrying your cross” is a metaphor for being a disciple and following the teachings of Jesus.\u00a0 I’m still curious though.\u00a0 How long has this man felt called to carry his cross?\u00a0 Is he the only one or are there others out there walking with him in North Charleston?\u00a0 What are your thoughts?\u00a0 Are actions like this a sincere expression of faith, or do they serve to alienate and separate Christians from the communities they are to serve?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
