{"id":48,"date":"2009-04-15T01:28:53","date_gmt":"2009-04-15T01:28:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lowcosttech.wordpress.com\/?p=48"},"modified":"2010-01-22T05:13:20","modified_gmt":"2010-01-22T05:13:20","slug":"the-media-revolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/livingarguments.com\/?p=48","title":{"rendered":"The media revolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ok.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll admit I&#8217;m a history buff.\u00a0 That&#8217;s not really embarrassing.\u00a0 What I tend to hide is that I enjoy pretty much any history.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll spend annoying amounts of time learning how an organization works; and then, I&#8217;ll try to determine how it used to work and why it changed.\u00a0 You&#8217;re probably confused at this point.\u00a0 What does my facination with minutia have to do with a<em> &#8216;media revolution&#8217;<\/em>? \u00a0 It means that instead of observing an overarching trend in human society from the present backwards, I get to experience it firsthand and try to guess what the end result will be.<\/p>\n<p>As background I was in high school during the 1990s.\u00a0 I remember <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gopher_(protocol)\" target=\"_blank\">gopher<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Archie_search_engine\">Archie<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Veronica_(computer)\">Veronica<\/a>.\u00a0 I was also there when the World Wide Web swept them into the histories of Wikipedia.\u00a0 The way we use, interact with and create media has greatly changed since then.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll even provide an example to prove my point.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s imagine a typical non-profit in 1985.\u00a0 Peter Drucker had not yet written his groundbreaking book <em>&#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;ct=res&amp;cd=1&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FManaging-Non-Profit-Organization-Principles-Practices%2Fdp%2F0887306012&amp;ei=oTHlSfbIN47fmQfIzomCDA&amp;usg=AFQjCNFlVk2sOORsLFYeAvBgUXscxvK0Ng\">Managing the non-profit organization:\u00a0 practices and principles<\/a>&#8216;.<\/em> The non-profit board of directors would meet quarterly, discuss business, make decisions and discuss financing.\u00a0 A duly elected secretary would write everything down, transcribe it using a typewriter, and have copies made for the next board meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Now think of a non-profit in 2009.\u00a0 Most of their boards still haven&#8217;t read Peter Drucker&#8217;s book and many smaller organizations still do business the same way they did it in 1985.\u00a0 Non-profits with a health acceptance of change have adapted well though.\u00a0 They conduct business using email, online discussion groups, and the media they use to contact and engage their donors and constituents has changed radically.\u00a0 Instead of mailing out donation request letters, non-profits are using email and <a href=\"www.facebook.com\">Facebook<\/a> and asking for online donations.\u00a0 Instead of printing out copies of the organization&#8217;s newsletter, they&#8217;re using <a href=\"http:\/\/issuu.com\/\">ISSUU<\/a> to maintain digital copies that are embeddable on a website.\u00a0 The ability and methods to compose media have increased drastically.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn&#8217;t mean that traditional methods of mailers aren&#8217;t used.\u00a0 It&#8217;s required non-profits to branch out and expand the number of ways the touch people.\u00a0 Honestly, it&#8217;s a brutal learning curve.\u00a0 Over time a smaller portion of a non-profit&#8217;s donors use those &#8216;<em>traditional<\/em>&#8216; methods.\u00a0 If they haven&#8217;t started progressively adopting technology, they&#8217;ll become ineffective in their mission.<\/p>\n<p>I honestly don&#8217;t know where this media revolution is going.\u00a0 I just know that it&#8217;s moving progressively faster, and it has become a part of our society.\u00a0 While I find the technology wonderful and useful, I wonder what will be recognizable when I&#8217;m an old man telling children stories of how I used the World Wide Web when I was a young man. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<em> <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ok.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll admit I&#8217;m a history buff.\u00a0 That&#8217;s not really embarrassing.\u00a0 What I tend to hide is that I enjoy pretty much any history.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll spend annoying amounts of time learning how an organization works;
