Repentance

I recently bought a Kindle.  That Kindle paid for itself with one International Herald Tribune article.  The article was about a man named As'ad Shaftari.  He was an intelligence officer in a Christian militia during Lebanon's  Civil War (1975-1990).  He is still feared in parts of the Muslim community for the torture and killings that was carried out on his orders and the lives he ended personally.  This is how Shaftari describes his mindset during that time: At the end of the week I would go to church, after killing and torturing, to confess, but it was futile. I didn’t see killing … [Read more...]

Relay for Life

Relay for Life is always one of my favorite charity events.  Last year I did the Relay with the Charleston Jaycees.  This year I'm co-captain for the young adult team at my church.  There's about a month left until the event.  It'll be great.  If I get some time I might even do some podcasting during the event. More tips from the airport

While traveling recently, I saw more items to add to this previous post. Carry On Luggage When the gate agent announces before boarding that the plane is full and overhead space is at a premium and to please gate check your luggage, GATE CHECK YOUR LUGGAGE!  This is one of those follow instructions moments.  If your bag is the size of a 12 year old, and you are in zone 4, the chances of you finding overhead space is slim to none.  You may loose 5 minutes waiting at the plane side for your bag or at baggage claim if they checked it all the way through.  Likely, you'll have saved everyone on … [Read more...]

Flying etiquette

As someone who travels a lot, I find that people can be amazingly insensitive and inattentive  in airports and on airplanes.  I've prepared a short list of behavior that should make air transit better if followed by more people. Ticketing Look for an open e-ticket station.  Do NOT stand in line like cattle.  You standing in line like cattle means I spend more time in the line.  If you see someone in front of an unused e-ticket station waiting for the agent to ask a question, please politely ask them if you can use the station while they wait.  If you see an open station and you aren't the … [Read more...]

Snow!

You don't often see snow in the low country of South Carolina.  It was a wonderful Friday night and Saturday morning.  I think this is the third time I've seen snow in South Carolina since 1989.  Every time it has happened, the state effectively closes down for lack of snow clearing equipment and to keep SC drivers off the road.  Fortunately, this snow fall happened at a wonderful time.  It started on a Friday night, and most of it melted by nightfall on Saturday.  The neighborhood kids had a wonderful morning making snowmen and having snowball fights.  After playing in it a while, I pulled … [Read more...]

Even in War

A few weeks ago, I heard a discussion of what I would consider one of the most peculiar events in the 20th Century.  The event historically is known as the Christmas Truce of 1914.  Many accounts are greatly romanticized, but certain facts come through in all the stories.  World War I had started a few months prior.  The front lines between the Germans and English were close enough that they could hear each other.  On Christmas Eve, German and British soldiers began singing Christmas carols to each other across no-man's-land.  On Christmas Day, some German soldiers stood up from the trenches, … [Read more...]
